The hike

The trail to Refugio Italia (Manfredo Segre) on Laguna Negra starts near Colonia Suiza outside Bariloche. It climbs through lenga and coihue forest along the Arroyo Goye valley before opening onto granite slopes and the dark, still lake that gives the hut its name.

Most hikers go up and back in a long day; staying overnight at the refugio lets you catch sunrise on the lake and continue on the Nahuel Huapi traverse toward Refugio Frey.
